The OEM and Retail use ensures that all pistols shipped from the manufacturer are in an inert state while in transit, while in inventory, in the display case, during demonstration to prospective customers, and when delivered to the final retail customer.  During these latter stages of marketing, demonstration, and sales, the pistol is fully functional, the customer can dry fire, test, and manipulate the features of the pistol in a retail setting while completely inert and safe. 

The training use, likewise, ensures a 100% inert training environment, yet allows broad training application in a classroom setting.  Training procedures like trigger reset, all stages of malfunction clearing, and drawing from concealment, normally reserved for a live fire range can now be performed safely in a classroom setting with a lower student/teacher ratio.  Additionally the use of the Barrel Plug allows students to experience “Aspect Correct” training, meaning all training functions are performed with the students actual firearm with all operational features fully functional except one, firing a live round.  With the plug correctly installed, a magazine of live ammo can be inserted into the pistol and the slide racked; resulting only in a stage 2 malfunction.  The obvious effort and time required to field strip the pistol to remove the plug allows sales personnel and trainers sufficient time to intervene in the act and prevent any dangerous situation from developing. 

In the home, the necessity of field stripping the pistol to remove the plug, and then correct reassembly, prevents small children from accessing a live weapon.  The ability to attach a padlock to the plug gives a second tier of in home safety, requiring keyed access to allow removal upon disassembly.
